The Blood of Dawnwalker has no main quest, apparently, and now I’m a lot more interested in playing it

I'll be honest with you guys, as far as I know Blood of the Dawnwalkerthat is, not The Witcher 3. From some of the people who helped create The Witcher 3, I didn't feel any interest in it. Of course it is recent look at gameplay certainly paints at least a polished picture, but at a quick glance I have to admit that I just chalked it up to a vampire witcher. But I was quickly drawn into this thanks to an important element of the game, which its director explained in a new interview: there is no main quest.

This comes from eurogamerwho spoke about this very fact with game director (and co-director of The Witcher 3) Konrad Tomaszkiewicz. After clarifying that there is “no main quest” in Blood of the Dawnwalker, Tomaskiewicz explained: “You build your experience based on the quests you encounter. You know where your experience is. [enemy is]. You can attack this place at any time. It's up to you to decide if you want to do it yourself or if you want to build yourself, find powerful items, develop your character, or complete some quests and find allies to help you along the way.”

Here's a line from Tomaszkiewicz that I particularly like: “We want to bring video games closer to tabletop role-playing games and give you the freedom to experience what you want to experience.” role playing games as a genre it's obviously popular, but most of them end up being quite limited in what you can actually do. There are limits in the world of video games! The restrictions are clear, but I'm always curious to see how someone might try to break them.

This ability to try to achieve your goal is technically nothing new, Tomaszkiewicz later compares it to Fallout: “In this area, our game is more like the old Fallout, the first and second [games]where you have a clear goal and everything is optional – it’s up to you. You travel the world and decide for yourself what you want to do. There is no main quest.”

Not to mention, The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild lets you find the final boss almost from the start. That said, Fallout is obviously an old-school RPG at this point, and Breath of the Wild is in a weird genre space and also has a core story, so I'm interested to see how Blood of Dawnwalker tackles that kind of structure.

The Blood of Dawnwalker is due out sometime in 2026.
