Phone Black 2 stars Madeleine McGraw and Mason Thames say Finny and Gwen are at the center of the sequel, and it's their unique bond that drives the upcoming film.
“I think there are so many layers to the Black Phone films. I think a lot of people just focus on Grabber,” McGraw tells GamesRadar+. “The real heart of the film is about Finny and Gwen’s relationship, their sibling bond and bond, and how they always look out for each other all the time. I think Scott and Cargill have done an amazing job of making sure that each character has a unique arc and seeing these characters grow and seeing them mature in different ways.”
The sequel jumps forward four years later to 1982, where Finny and his sister Gwen (Madeleine McGraw) are still struggling with the trauma they both suffered at the hands of Grabber (Ethan Hawke). As Finny turns to violence and pot, Gwen retreats into herself… and is plagued by visceral nightmares that seem all too real. These nightmares lead her and Finny to Camp Alpine Lake, where they encounter several dead children in need of their help… and, unfortunately, Grabber, who is back and angrier (and dare I say it, scarier) than ever.
“Going into detail, I didn't know what they were going to do with Finny,” Thames explains. “I've heard ideas and everything, and Scott and I talked about it a lot, and we kind of found this kid who's dealing with his trauma by not dealing with it by smoking a lot of weed and really just trying to drown out the noise—which in a lot of ways is a reflection of his father after losing him to our mother. It's really sad, but seeing where Finny is now and seeing how he deals with it, he doesn't really care at this point. just kind of wants to go away and be left alone, but Grabber finds something that he really, really just loves, like the only thing he loves, which is Gwen, and he uses that as a weakness, and it's so sad.”
Scott Derrickson is directing the script, which he co-wrote with C. Robert Cargill and is based on the story and characters created by Joe Hill (the original story can be purchased at Amazon as a special tie-in to the first film). The cast includes Demián Bichir, Jeremy Davies, Arianna Rivas, Maev Beaty, Graham Abbey, Anna Lohr and Miguel Mora.
