Telus reportedly texting Public Mobile customers a $40/100GB deal

Some Public Mobile customers report receiving messages from Telus offering special deals if they switch, such as a $40/100GB plan.

According to several posts on RedditTelus sent government customers various offers, including the aforementioned $40 for 100GB deal, as well as plans costing $29 for 20GB and $25 for 5GB. Unfortunately, your mileage may vary from these offers – I have a line with Public Mobile and didn't receive such an offer, but I also probably wouldn't take advantage of it even if it came to me.

Unfortunately, the text is short on details, only noting that the 40/100GB plan includes 5G data and that the price includes a pre-authorized bank payment discount. It's unclear if the plan is limited to calls and texts across Canada or if it's limited to Canada/USA or North America.

This last point may be important to many government customers, given that most provider plans include Canada/USA/Mexico. For example, right now you can get a 40/70GB plan from Public. Personally, I'd choose this over Telus' $40/100GB plan since I don't use as much data and would benefit more from using it in the US since I'm (unfortunately) often in the States for work.

There's also the issue of discounts on pre-authorized payments – I already dislike automatic payments because I think it's easier for carriers to hide price increases from consumers, but Telus' insistence on using pre-authorized bank payments is even worse because it bypasses the protections offered by credit cards.

Telus' other offerings are slightly better, but still not great. The $29/20GB plan is a significant improvement over the $30/8GB Public plan, while the $25/5GB plan only provides additional storage over the $25/4GB Public plan.

These suggestions may end up being helpful, depending on your existing public plan and your wireless needs. But I suspect that for many, sticking with Public will be the best option, unless people really need more data.
