On CNN's State of the Union on Sunday, Sen. Chris Murphy (D-Conn.) said President Donald Trump was using tariffs to “get rich.”
Host Jake Tapper said, “How did you react to this new Trump tariff on Canada?
Murphy said, “I think this is just more evidence that these tariffs have nothing to do with us. Prices in this country are going up on everything. Manufacturing jobs are going away. We've lost about 30,000 manufacturing jobs already this year. These tariffs are really just a political tool that the president is using to help himself and sometimes to enrich himself. You've seen companies openly admit that they investing in his cryptocurrency in an attempt to gain favor for him and try to get better treatment on tariffs. You saw Apple contribute $1 million to his inauguration and then magically get a tariff waiver and then sometimes try to suppress free speech, you know, whether he likes it or not. Even the Canadian government or the Ontario government has the right to criticize him. But now he's going to use tariffs to try to punish people overseas who speak out against him, just as he uses the Department of Justice or the Federal Communications Commission to try to punish and control people who speak out against him here in America. Therefore, these tariffs are not intended to restore our economy. They are not aimed at helping ordinary consumers. They just… they just want to give Trump more powers so he can try to get political and financial gain.”
