Another day, another dehumanizing meme from the White House trying to appropriate cultural meanings for its agenda in support of ICE. This time it's Saturday Night Live song “Big Boys” featuring SZA. A song that went viral two years ago. A video posted on White House social media shows footage of the arrest accompanied by a snippet of a song in which SZA sings “It's Cuffing Season.” If you think it sucks, SZA agrees. On Twitter SOS the singer wrote that the White House's current trend of “harassing artists for free promo is PEAK DARK.” She added that this technique is “Evil and Boring.” SZA's manager Punch also spoke out against the video, writing: “Trying to provoke an artist to respond to further the spread of propaganda and political agenda is disgusting. Stop it.”
SZA is just the latest artist to speak out against the Trump administration's use of their music. Last week, Sabrina Carpenter objected to the use of “Juno” in another pro-ICE video. Carpenter's first video was deleted, but a second one appeared soon after, using it SNL promotional video. Who on the White House social team matters the most? SNL fan and how they feel about James Austin Johnsonimpression?
