A Syrian fruit shop owner has been hailed as a hero after video emerged of him fighting the alleged gunman involved in the Bondi Beach attack in Sydney on Sunday night.
Ahmed Al Ahmed was visible In the video, he crouched behind a car and then ran up to the alleged shooter and took the gun from him. After falling to the ground, the shooter backs away and Ahmed picks up his gun and points it at the shooter. Ahmed is then seen leaning the gun against a tree trunk.
According to BBC News, shootingwhich killed fifteen people, “occurred when more than 1,000 people attended an event to celebrate Hanukkah”:
Mr Ahmed, a fruit shop owner and father of two, remains in hospital where he underwent surgery for bullet wounds to his arm and hand, his family told 7News Australia.
Fifteen people were killed and dozens were injured in a shooting Sunday evening as more than 1,000 people attended a Hanukkah event. Police have since declared the attack an act of terrorism targeting the Jewish community.
Law enforcement officials said “the two shooters were a father and son,” and that the 50-year-old father “died at the scene,” the newspaper reported.
As a result of Ahmed's heroic efforts, he was reportedly “shot twice while confronting his attacker.” according to in “Eyes of the Middle East”.
Ahmed's cousin Mustafa told 7News that Ahmed is “in the hospital” and added that they “hope he will be okay,” the outlet reported.
Some people, such as Chris Minns, the Premier of New South Wales, called Ahmed a “true hero”.
“I have no doubt that so many people are alive tonight because of his bravery,” Minns added.
Ahmed's cousin also called him a hero and said he received a call from Ahmed's doctor. Sydney Morning Herald reported.
“The doctor just called me and I’m going to see him,” Mustafa said. “I can’t give you any updates until I see him.”
