NEW YORK — Just two and a half weeks after release Sydney Sweeney box office hit “Housekeeper” gets a sequel.
Lionsgate announced Tuesday that it will begin production on “The Maid's Secret” later this year. The film will be based on the second of Frieda McFadden's bestselling trilogy of books.
“The Maid” was a hit at the holiday box office, grossing more than $75 million and $133 million worldwide within 17 days of its release. Paul Feig's psychological thriller cost a modest $35 million to make.
Lionsgate said The Maid's Secret is being developed with Feig and Sweeney returning, including Sweeney as an executive producer. “The Maid” screenwriter Rebecca Sonnenschein is writing a sequel.
“It's clear from both the global box office and social media posts that audiences have responded strongly—and loudly—to the completely unique and truly theatrical experience of 'The Maid' and want to know what happens next,” Adam Fogelson, chairman of Lionsgate Motion Picture Group, said in a statement.
“The Maid” gave Sweeney a major box office victory after disappointing result For her award-winning boxing drama Christie in November. This film only grossed $2 million worldwide. In The Maid, Sweeney plays the role of a live-in maid hired by a wealthy couple, played by Amanda Seyfried and Brandon Sklenar.
