Participant in the 48th season of the series “Survivor” Eva Erickson barely dodged the criminal who opened fire at Brown University on Saturday afternoon, but she says she's not too worried about another shooting there.
Watch our interview – Ph.D. The candidate says she feels “safe” squatting in her off-campus residence in Providence, Rhode Island, because she assumes her attacker is “long gone,” citing… “Lightning doesn't strike the same place twice.” On the other hand, she notes that this idea is “terrible” because it appears that the shooter managed to escape.

While Eve feels generally safe, she told TMZ that she and her peers have as much information as the general public and the lack of knowledge about her attacker is “irritating” for everyone. She longs for answers to simple questions – how and how such a tragedy could happen.
She is sure of one thing: something has to change. Eve says it's “crazy” that students in America are so vulnerable to gun violence, noting… “I just wanted to go to school, learn, have this community and be safe. And now it’s been taken away from me.” While she says she doesn't have the answers, she looks to lawmakers who are better prepared to advocate for gun safety regulations.
Instead of immediately leaving the area after the horrific shooting, Eva stayed and helped her friends and hockey teammates (she is the captain of the men's club hockey team) get out of the dorm and plans to return home with her parents in Minnesota for Christmas.

She also managed to provide some cheer as bullets terrorized students on another part of campus, telling TMZ that she met some of the “Survivor” fans who were trapped with her in the school's indoor athletic and basketball court. She says she was very happy to “bring a smile to someone's face because we're all in this really scary situation.”
And if you're wondering whether her second stint on the hit CBS series prepared her for nearly coming into contact with a shooter, the answer is a resounding no. The scientist and athlete explains that she never felt safe on the show and nothing could have prepared her for being around such horror.
Erica is working on her Ph.D. in hydraulic and thermal engineering from Brown. She explained on social media that she made a last-minute decision to leave her research office and go to the gym, something she never does in the afternoon, and ended up missing the culprit by 5 minutes.
