Streaming service makes rare decision to lower its monthly fees

Fubo announced today that it is cutting prices on some of its subscription plans, a rare move for the streaming service.

Fubo is a sports-focused vMVPD (virtual multi-channel video programming distributor or company that allows people to watch traditional TV channels live over the Internet). Disney closed its acquisition of Fubo V October.

Today Fubo announced that monthly prices for some “Live TV” subscription plans, which include hundreds of channels, including non-sports channels such as FX and The Disney Channel, will be 14.8 percent cheaper. The new prices begin on “a billing cycle date occurring on or after Jan. 1, 2026,” Fubo said.

Here are the new prices:

  • Essential: $74/month (previously $85/month)
  • Pros: $75/month (previously $85/month)
  • Elite: $84/month (previously $95/month)

When streaming services announce prices, it almost always means higher costs for subscribers.

However, some subscribers likely feel the price cut is a necessity rather than a perk since Fubo has no NBCUniversal channels as of Nov. 21. include local NBC affiliates, Telemundo, nine regional sports channels (Fubo noted that subscribers can also pay a lower fee after the January billing cycle if any regional sports networks they previously received are no longer available on Fubo) and 32 channels, including Bravo, CNBC, MSNBC and USA Network. Fubo previously announced it would provide subscribers with a $15 credit due to the outage.

A Fubo spokesperson told Ars Technica that the new prices “reflect NBCU's withdrawal from its networks from Fubo.”

A Fubo spokesperson said it couldn't comment on whether the new prices would stick if Fubo brought back NBCUniversal's channels because it was “speculative.”

NBCUniversal Fubo Shutdown

In a Nov. 25 statement, Fubo said NBCUniversal is attempting to overcharge Fubo for channels that will live under Versant, the company that will be created by the spinoff of NBCUniversal's cable channels and other digital properties expected to be debut in January.

“Even though they did not justify the cost to Fubo subscribers, Fubo offered to distribute Versant channels for one year,” Fubo said. “NBCU wants Fubo to sign a multi-year deal – well in advance of the time when Versant channels will be owned by a separate company. NBCU wants Fubo subscribers to subsidize those channels.”
