He says Texas-born Sink's first meeting with Ike lasted four hours. “And then she just dove in and did some workshops with Rob, working on the language and the text. And from there it really grew organically that this was a play, this was a role for her… Like I said, it felt incredibly organic, very organic from the very beginning.”

“And we were very lucky that the stars aligned because this period of time that she was actually available for something was consistent with the freedom of the Harold Pinter Theater,” explains Bierman.

Shakespeare Romeo and Juliet This was the first play Ike produced professionally, back in 2012, and Bierman says Ike has “unfinished business” to take care of.

“I think for Rob it's an attempt to explore, really within the play, the question of time… and how there's a moving motif in the play about time and how things move very, very quickly,” Birman says. “And potentially, if things hadn't happened so quickly, they wouldn't have had the outcome that they have. And so he wants to explore it through the lens of time and time passing, and just hint at what could have happened if Romeo had arrived half an hour later, he could have found Juliet awake. But he doesn't. That's what makes it so tragic.”

Ike likes to scrutinize classic plays to find new ways to present a play. An example is his stunning modern production Oedipuswhich takes place on election night. It was a success in London with Mark Strong and Lesley Manville and producer Sonia Friedman. just opened it on Broadway.

I ask Birman if there is any possibility that Romeo and Juliet at some point in the future he will travel to New York.

He is quite reasonably cautious. “I think, well, for now, I think it's kind of. And it's also – we've just filled this nice gap before the next one.” Spider-Man the film will come out and then [Sink is] busy again.

Both he and Ike are delighted with the way Sink has tackled the role. “Juliet as a character has a lot of agency and has a lot more of an active journey that sometimes doesn't come out… She's lived a pretty sheltered life and her parents are trying to marry her off to Paris,” Bierman tells us. “And she realizes that maybe this isn't her destiny, but maybe there is a way out of this, that you don't just have to accept it. And then go into Romeo.”

This is an opportunity to explore “Juliet with dynamism and agency,” he states.
