Steve Kerr takes blame for Draymond Green blowup, hopes he retires with GSW

Golden State Warriors coach Steve Kerr speaks heated exchange with Draymond Green during a lengthy press session on Wednesday.

Green left the bench during a timeout in the third quarter of Golden State's game against Golden State. Orlando Magic Monday and eventually headed to the locker room to cool down. Kerr stated that even after Green returned to the bench for the rest of the game, he did not intend to play.

“We talked a little bit and he made the decision to go back to the dressing room to cool down and that’s all I’m going to say about that. Everything is confidential. I have nothing more to add,” Kerr said at the time. Green had nine points and seven rebounds in Monday's 120-97 win.

Kerr later took blame for his role in the bombing.

“Monday night wasn't my finest hour, and it was a time where I needed to stay calm around the group,” Kerr said after practice Wednesday ahead of Golden State's Christmas Day meeting with the Dallas Mavericks. “I regret my actions in this conversation. I apologized to [Green]. He apologized to me. We both apologized to the team.”

Kerr added that he and Green are both competitive by nature, which can sometimes lead to high-energy moments.

“These things happen, especially when you have two incredibly competitive people like Dray and me. So, in the 12 years we've been together, this has happened from time to time, and I'm not proud of it.”

Kerr and Green first formed their partnership when ex NBA player was named head coach of the Warriors. He continued to highlight the similarities he shares with Greene.

“We are much more alike than anyone could have imagined. So yeah, it's not that uncommon. I would say that such a separation and explosion has not happened for several years, but in our 12 years together this is not the first time. And we always, always found a way to not only bounce back, but also succeed as a result.”

Kerr also spoke clearly about Green's basketball legacy.

“My No. 1 goal, honestly, is for him to finish his career as a Warrior with us, fighting metaphorically—not literally, but fighting and competing together—until we both quit. And I believe that this will happen. Because I believe in Draymond and I believe in myself. And I believe in everything that we have built in 12 years.”

The warriors won Mavericks at Christmas will improve to 16-15 for the season.
