Stephen A. Smith is throwing in the race card after the Miami Dolphins fired general manager Chris Grier following a brutal 28-6 loss to the Baltimore Ravens on Thursday.
By Friday morning, the team announced it was “parting ways” with Grier.
Chairman/Managing General Partner Stephen M. Ross released a statement saying he was done with Grier.
This morning I, along with general manager Chris Grier, made the decision to part ways. I have incredible respect for Chris and his family and want to thank him for his many contributions to the Miami Dolphins over the past 26 years.
As I assessed the state of the team and through conversations with Chris, it became clear to both of us that change could not wait. We must improve – in 2025, 2026 and beyond – and we need to start now. Champ Kelly will serve as interim general manager effective immediately and we will begin a search for a new general manager. BroBibble reported.
But Stephen A. Smith didn't see a solution that was best for the team. He seems to see racism and wonders why Mike McDaniel, who is white, wasn't fired before Chris Grier, who is black.
“It was about Tua. It was about Mike McDaniel. And brother gets fired first? All I know is I better hear Mike McDaniel's name today,” he exclaimed on ESPN. First take on Friday.
Smith criticized the team and said McDaniel should be fired as well.
“Mike McDaniel with glasses, giving monosyllabic answers at a press conference, looking like a guy from the geek team at Best Buy… is this brother going to keep his job for the rest of the season? No, that's bullshit. This guy needs to go too,” Smith said.
One commentator turned this around on Smith: letter to X: “If McDaniels' skin had been darker, the SAS would never have called for his dismissal.”
Smith has thrown the race card a number of times in his sports commentary.
For example, in August he insisted that white sports analysts should not be allowed to comment on the actions of black players on the field during fights between players.
