TORONTO, Oct. 29, 2025 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) — The United Steelworkers (USW) stands with Alberta teachers and will respond with all its might to the Alberta government's neglect of workers and unions.
“We've seen this before, and workers won,” said Marty Warren, USW national director.
“When educators were threatened by a brutal government that ignored workers' rights in Ontario, the entire labor movement mobilized and the government had to back down,” Warren said.
Teachers want to teach. Thanks to the Alberta government's use of a non-intervention clause, teachers are being forced to return to work.
The labor movement will challenge this. Workers' rights have already been upheld by the courts. Workers will do everything possible to ensure that these rights are respected.
“In the meantime, we stand in solidarity with Alberta teachers because we are stronger together. And just like in Ontario in 2022, the government will be forced to back down,” Warren said.
As Alberta Federation of Labor (AFL) President Gil McGowan said, “The Charter of Rights and Freedoms is the supreme law of the land.”
