Square Enix is asking Dragon Quest 1 & 2 HD-2D Remake players not to share photos or videos of what happens at the end of the nearly 40-year-old role-playing game, or it will have to remove them.
Even though it takes forever Dragon Quest 12 will emerge from its caveSquare Enix is set to remake the series, starting with Dragon Quest 3 HD-2D Remake in 2024. This will be followed Dragon Quest 1 and 2 HD-2D Remake release this week and Dragon Quest 7 Update will be released in February 2026. But even though Dragon Quest 1 and 2 were released in 1986 and 1987, Square Enix takes spoilers as seriously as any other game.
In a post on Dragon Quest website (by using VGK), Square shared its guidelines for streaming and publishing game images and videos. The post (via machine translation) states in one of the rules: “If you are broadcasting a scene that is closely related to the game's script, please voluntarily mark it as 'Contains Spoilers' so as not to spoil the fun for those about to play the game.”
Specifically, Square is also asking players to “Please refrain from live streaming or posting gameplay videos or images after the second credits sequence of 'Dragon Quest 2' until November 29, 2025,” which is one month after the game's release.
While a spoiler warning for an '80s game might seem a little silly, Square Enix is hinting at it. “numerous” new scenarios” which connect the games to Dragon Quest 3 (which is a prequel to the original duo), and that there are “a new twist” that will be a “really big surprise” for veteran fans. So it appears that Square Enix is putting a lot of emphasis on where this new content is located. Square will presumably remove the offending videos, but the company goes further, noting that “if a user violates these rules, we may temporarily or permanently suspend that user from using the game.”
However, these are general restrictions of some publishers. But despite the warning, I have no doubt that by this time tomorrow, after the game launches, we will have YouTube videos with thumbnails showing new content and talking about what's in the title.
Square Enix is next remaking Dragon Quest 7 because “players these days are much more accustomed to games with darker stories” and JRPGs are “often said to have darker, sadder episodes.”
