Final Fantasy designer Toshiyuki Itahana is leaving Square Enix after more than 25 years with the company.
Itahana explained in statement wrote in Japanese and English that he decided to leave Square Enix late last year, prompted by the 25th anniversary of Final Fantasy 9.
“When I started to think seriously about preparing myself to continue drawing for many years to come, I decided to leave Square Enix at the end of last year,” he explained. “Last year's milestone was the 25th anniversary of Final Fantasy 9, a truly significant event, and I was deeply grateful to see so many people celebrating FF9.
“After the 25th Anniversary illustration and supervision work is completed, I feel a strong sense of accomplishment in fulfilling the role assigned to me. At the same time, I felt that now was the right moment to draw a line under this chapter and take on new challenges.”
Itahana, who also contributed character designs to spin-offs Chocobo and Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles, as well as Nier Automata, says he will continue to work as a freelance illustrator and character designer.
“While remaining deeply grateful for all the connections I have been fortunate to receive through my work, I hope to build on my experiences and continue to create a wide variety of new works of art,” Itahana added.
“I'm still finding my way at the moment – taking advice and learning from senior freelance illustrators – but if you happen to come across my work somewhere, I'd be truly happy if you supported me.”
Itahana concluded by thanking the fans and “everyone I’ve had the pleasure of working with over the years.”
