Sources: Tulane’s Sumrall emerges as favorite for Florida job

Tulane Coach John Sumrall has emerged as the clear favorite to become the team's next head coach. Florida Gatorssources told ESPN's Pete Thamel.

Florida diverted my attention from Ole Miss Coach Lane Kiffin earlier this week realized through casual communication that he was interested in other options, likely moving to LSU or stay with the rebels, sources told ESPN on Friday.

Sumrall is expected to make a decision on his future by Sunday morning as he considers staying at Tulane or moving to Gainesville. It also attracted significant interest from Auburnbut the Tigers have since turned their attention to other candidates, another indication that Florida is emerging as the clear frontrunner for Sumrall's services, sources said.

Sumrall, former SEC player Kentuckywhere he later served as assistant coach and co-defensive coordinator, is 18-7 in two seasons at Tulane. He also won back-to-back Sun Belt titles as a head coach Troy in 2022 and 2023.

Sumrall, 43, attracted outside interest after his first season at Tulane, earning a contract extension after just one season at the helm.

Tulane (9-2) hosts Charlotte on Saturday night in the regular season finale. The Green Wave can secure a spot in the American Conference championship game against North Texas with a win over the 49ers.
