Sonic Chaos was one of the first games I ever played, and as such, Sonic has a huge nostalgic hold on me. I'm one of the few who continues to hope that any new 3D Sonic game will at least hold my hand for a while before breaking my heart. That being said, Sonic and his team have a pretty solid track record in handheld adventures, so when I heard about Sonic Rumble, I felt a small pinch of optimism. SEGA is trying to create a fast and simple multiplayer experience with some twists to make us feel right at home.
Looking at this, I had some thoughts: After playing things like Crash Bash and Fall Guys, I was open to competing in the Sonic universe. All that speed and jumping is perfect for racing and platforming, and I want to show off my skills. While Sonic's cast has definitely gotten a little bigger with all these new characters, it does lose its personality in some places. But maybe that's a good thing… I could just look at it as a stylized and colorful multiplayer game that happens to have Sonic elements in it.
Of course, Sonic has rich level designs and mechanics to exploit, as can be seen in the various challenges. The racing looks like it could be placed among Sonic's many 2.5D worlds, and the hunting brings back all types of robot enemies, from the early entries in the series to some of the more modern ones. I also found that it gives you plenty of chances to play well by focusing on what you can get for yourself, or play rough by going after opponents to lower their scores and take their stuff. The latter is especially fun to get back at the guy who knocked you down, only to rub it in later when you're in the running for first place. I'll definitely have to put in the time and effort to unlock some of the best goodies, but so far it's a nice, smooth ride.
Sonic Rumble is brought to us by SEGA and is available on Android and iOS.
