Google is in the process cleaning assistant across all of its products, and the next target is Google Maps. Starting today, Gemini will begin rolling out to Maps, bringing new capabilities for navigation, location information, and more. This update will eventually usurp Google Assistant's role in Maps entirely, but it will take time to roll out. So for now, how Google Maps' Smart Assistant works will still depend on how you run the app.
In all Gemini incarnations, Google emphasizes their conversational abilities. While the Assistant had difficulty keeping one or two balls in the air, you could theoretically give Gemini much more complex instructions. In the Google demo, someone asks for nearby restaurants with cheap vegan food, but instead of just providing a list, it suggests something based on the user's data. Gemini can also provide additional location information.
Maps will also get their own Gemini-filled version of Lens after you park. You can point your camera at a landmark, restaurant, or other business to get instant answers to your questions. This experience will be different from the version of Lens available in the Google app, which is focused on giving you location information. Perhaps you want to know about a restaurant's menu or what it's like inside. Sure, you could open the door… but AI!
While Google was recently forced to admit that hallucinations are inevitable, the Maps team says they don't expect it to be an issue for this version of Gemini. Suggestions made by a generative AI bot are based on billions of Google place listings and Street View Photos. This is said to reduce the likelihood of the robot identifying the location. Google also makes it clear that Gemini is not responsible for your route choices.
