We don't like to talk about it, something that all living things have in common, but it's an inevitability that seems to cross the minds of more and more game developers as they get older: death. Apparently, this concerns not only us, but also the Hollow Knight Team Cherry studio.
Developer Silksong describes his plans to expand beyond the Metroidvania series in new interview with Bloombergalthough co-founders Ari Gibson and William Pellen fear they may die before they can release everything they want. In the end, Silksong took seven years to complete.
“And we have other games that we're planning to make,” Gibson adds. “The only thing that's really worrying is – and we've talked about this before – death. It's not that far off if you spend seven years on a project and maybe add two more. So it would be nice to make some more games. Obviously our time frame still allows us to fit in a few more. Except for an unexpected tragedy.”
71-year-old Dragon Quest creator Yuji Horii is also well aware of his mortality, although he prays to become a “witness” Dragon Quest 50th Anniversary in 2036. If they are lucky, all these people will one day understand what Emily Dickinson meant when she wrote: “Because I could not stop for Death – He kindly stopped for me.”
