Deciding between Crabble Claw and Raptidon Fin for Ines V The Outer Worlds 2's The Better Than Nature quest seems like a great choice, and that's because it is. Choosing which part of Ethel Tinsley's monster grafts onto Inez's body will change how she fights and what role she plays on your team – and you can't change your mind.
Below we explain how the graft works, what you get from both and whether you should choose Crabble Claw or Raptidon Fin V The Outer Worlds 2.
What does Inez's transplant do in The Outer Worlds 2?
To obtain any grafting option during Better Than Nature, you need to defeat a powerful monster – the Giant Bone White Crab in the Mystic Cave for a claw or the Raptidon Matriarch for a fin. You can get both pieces, and the game marks both monsters on your map, but The Outer Worlds 2 only allows you to choose one to fix Ines' graft. The choice is permanent and cannot be canceled.
Selecting a transplant opens up Inez's skill tree, where you can choose a new skill every five levels. This is the only way for Inez to gain the skill and do anything other than shoot a rifle during combat, so if you plan on having her accompany you, it is recommended to complete this mission as soon as possible. Ines's grafting fix doesn't give you a set of mods to change how her skills work in combat. This will happen much later, after you receive a recorded message from her former companion on the flagship Auntie's Choice.
crab claw has two main functions. This shoots plasma ballsthe same as those spitting crabs that have previously bothered you on Paradise Island, and it wears out the enemy's armor faster than standard weapons. Plasma hits also stack and cause enemies to take additional burn damage over time.
Raptidon Fin also has two functions. This allows Ines to become invisible for a short time. This doesn't make much of a difference in terms of enemies spotting you during stealth segments, since they never pay attention to your comrades. However, this means she can slip away during combat without enemies following her, allowing her to survive a little longer without you having to revive her. More importantly, Raptidon Fin allows Ines to heal youwhich no other companion can do except VALERIE.
What to choose for Inez: Crabble Claw or Raptidon Fin?
We recommend choosing the Raptidon fin.. Crabble Claw seems like a great choice, but in our experience the base plasma damage and burn damage over time effect are quite low, even when Ines is at higher levels. Unless you specialize in leadership and perks that allow companions to use their abilities more often, this isn't much of a game changer. You also have many ways to reduce armor yourself more quickly and efficiently, such as using a biomass gun. Corrosion damage practically evaporates armor, and the pistol's high rate of fire means you'll be able to reduce armor much faster than Ines with her skills.
However, fighting the skeleton crabs is the only way to fully interact with the mechanisms in the Mysterious Cave. When you're ready, Ines will activate the sound system and make crawling noises from the speaker, but neither of these require you to pass a skill check.
VAL is the only companion that can heal you, which automatically makes Raptidon's Fin more valuable. You can pair Inez with VAL and have a ready source of non-toxic healing in battle, which is handy if you're knocked unconscious by an inhaler or need to conserve charges. Or, if you're not interested in having VAL around and want to use a different companion, you're missing out on the healer.
Later updates to both mutations unlocked through the skill tree improve their capabilities, but do not fundamentally change them. Crab Claw, for example, leaves a pool of plasma that damages any enemy that comes into contact with it, while Raptidon's Fin creates a cloud of healing mist. These are useful updates, but they do not fundamentally change the performance of any transplant. They simply enhance the effect.
