A shelter in place The order in Welland, Ont., has been lifted following the arrest of a suspect in a tense overnight standoff that began Friday morning in which a police officer was shot but not seriously injured.
The Niagara Regional Police Task Force was called to a home on Second Street around 7:45 a.m. Friday to assist Welland law enforcement officers. When police arrived, a man inside the home opened fire, hitting one officer in the chest.
Police say the officer's body armor absorbed the impact. The officer was taken to the hospital as a precaution and later released.
“It appears that in this case the body armor did its job of protecting the officer,” Const. Richard Hingley previously told Global News.

The suspect was identified as 59-year-old Daniel Tronko.
Police say upon arrival they established a large perimeter around the building and told residents in the area to shelter in place as a precaution.
Niagara Regional Police were assisted by tactical teams from the Hamilton, Halton and Peel police services.
Officers attempted to negotiate with Tronco throughout the day, evening and night. Tactical operations included the use of remote cameras sent into the house, but police say the cameras were repeatedly targeted and disabled.
Authorities arrested Tronco without incident at approximately 7:25 a.m. Saturday. He was taken to Niagara Hospital by ambulance. No additional officers or members of the public were injured.
Police lifted the stay-at-home order following the arrest and confirmed there was no ongoing threat to public safety. All road closures in the area have been lifted.
“This incident was resolved safely due to the professionalism and coordinated efforts of our members,” said Niagara Regional Police Chief Bill Fordy.
The Ontario Police Special Investigations Unit is investigating the officer's death.
Police say no further information can be released at this time due to the investigation.
