What a memorable Monday night for the Scott brothers, Nolan and Maxwell. The basketball game saw arguably the top two teams in Orange County Public Schools, Corona del Mar and Los Alamitos, go back and forth, with neither willing to budge.
Corona del Mar (17-1) got the ball under Los Alamitos' basket with 11.2 seconds left and trailed by one point. Coach Jason Simcoe, who had never beaten Los Alamitos in five seasons, called the final play, the goal of which was to get the ball to the least likely person, Nolan Scott, the football team's sophomore linebacker. Brother Maxwell screened him, Luke Mirhashemi found Nolan wide open under the basket and fed him the ball for an easy layup with 4.3 seconds left to secure a 78-77 win in Sunset League play at the newly opened Los Alamitos Gymnasium.
Maxwell Scott finished with 35 points. The brothers have been playing together since flag football as second graders. Maxwell played football his freshman year and then focused on basketball, but plans to return to football as a senior.
“He’s fun to play with,” Maxwell said.
What a game it was.
“Everyone was shooting,” Maxwell said.
Corona del Mar's successful final shot robbed a great game from Los Alamitos sophomore Isaiah Williamson, who finished with 26 points.
“I thought he was amazing,” Simcoe said of Williamson. “He'll be someone else.”
Los Alamitos fell to 8-7 and 0-1 in league play.
Oliver Nacra scored 19 points for Corona del Mar.
