U-series and H-series – what's the difference?
When browsing mini PC deals on Black Friday and Cyber Monday, you'll come across processors with the letter U or H (or HX or HS). What does this mean to you?
U stands for ultra-low power consumption. These processors are designed for efficiency and are best suited for business use, such as opening office applications and browsing the web.
H stands for High Performance. These processors are designed for long-term tasks without performance degradation and are ideal for tasks such as video editing and gaming.
HS (High Performance Slim) chips consume less power than H-series chips, but still provide similar performance and efficiency. I consider them an intermediate link between the U and H series processors.
HX (High Performance Extreme) is the absolute best in performance and is best suited for professional-level creative tasks and high-end gaming.
Do I need a video card?
If you're a business user, you're unlikely to need a discrete (or dedicated) graphics card. This adds cost and is not required to run office software.
If you are a content creator or a gamer, you will definitely need a graphics card. The problem is that most mini PCs have integrated graphics such as the Iris Xe or Radeon 780M, although some will have laptop GPUs.
If you need a graphics card for your workflow, make sure the mini PC has an OCuLink port, which allows you to add an external graphics processor (sometimes called an eGPU). If possible, I'll include it in the list of mini PC suggestions above.
Are Black Friday and Cyber Monday a good time to buy a mini computer?
That's right – after covering Black Friday sales for years, I see a lot of big price drops on mini PCs across the board, from budget models to high-end machines in the lead-up to and throughout the cyber sales event.
Which mini PC deal should I choose over Black Friday and Cyber Monday?
If you choose an Apple device, the M4-powered Mac mini is usually discounted on Black Friday, as it is now. While you may see older models like the Mac mini M2 on sale, I'd recommend going with any M4 configuration. The performance is better, it's twice as fast and superior in almost every way.
When it comes to Windows mini PCs, there's usually a wide selection available during a sale, from budget models that are best suited for office tasks to high-end machines with top-end specs that are suitable for productivity tasks, content creation and gaming. I see so many different configurations that you're really only limited by your budget.
