Sarault strikes gold again at Short Track World Tour in Montreal – Brandon Sun

MONTREAL — Courtney Saro won her second gold medal in as many days for Canada at the ISU World Tour short track speed skating event in Montreal on Sunday.

The 25-year-old from Moncton, Nebraska, won gold Sunday in the women's 1,500-meter final in two minutes, 22.156 seconds.

She finished ahead of Korea's Kim Gilley (2:22.217) and America's Corrine Stoddard (2:22.256).

“I went into the 1500m thinking I might be able to win the race, but I wasn't sure how my legs would compare to everyone else's. This is my first time competing in this format of the WorldTour, where 500m and 1500m runners are on the same day, so I'm proud of myself for finishing the races the way I did,” Saro said.

“It was nice for me to get into the 500m final and I'm going to build on that. And I felt I ran well in my 1500m win, I was ahead and strong. I'm glad all my hard work and training is paying off. It's nice when you train for something and get results.”

The two-time gold medalist – she won the women's 1000m final on Saturday – added bronze to her medal tally earlier in the afternoon, joining forces with Danae Blais of Chateauguay, Quebec, Stephen Dubois of Lachenay, Quebec, and Felix Roussel of Sherbrooke, Quebec, to top the podium in the mixed team 2000 meter relay.

The Canadians fluctuated between first and second positions until the 13th lap, when Blais' fall while attempting a pass put them out of contention for the medals. The four took advantage of the Korean penalty and finished in third place (2:44.691), behind the Netherlands (2:39.905) and China (2:39.528).

Sunday's third medal was won by veteran skater Kim Boutin of Sherbrooke, Quebec, who returned to the podium after never reaching it in the individual distance last season.

The 30-year-old used a fast start to take the lead in the women's 500m but was unable to fend off current world record holder Xandra Welzeboer of the Netherlands (42.972), who overtook Butin on the final lap to take gold.

Boutin took silver (43.087) and Stoddard took bronze (43.142).

Canada finishes the first World Tour stop of the season with seven medals, including three gold, one silver and three bronze. This puts them first in the overall medal count, ahead of Korea (six), China (four) and Italy (four).

They are second in the Team Crystal Globe rankings with 1,376 points, while Sarah leads the women's trophy race with 250 points.

The ISU World Short Track Speed Skating Tour returns to the Maurice Richard Arena next weekend, where Canada's Ice Maples will look to extend their lead in the Crystal Globe standings and secure their places at Milan-Cortina 2026.
