Samsung display and Intel have teamed up to develop new OLED technology that the tech giants claim can help improve battery life when using HDR.
Dubbed SmartPower HDR, the tech giants claim the new technology can minimize power consumption when viewing HDR content on an OLED screen.
Now this isn't the first time Intel demonstrated this technologyBut Samsung Display finally reveals details from how it works and expected energy savings. Interestingly, it's not yet known which laptops will get SmartPower HDR, so it's unclear what it will actually be used for.
Samsung Display notes that with SmartPower HDR, the laptop's chipset tracks the peak brightness of each frame displayed in real time. The OLED panel's timing controller chip then uses the data and the active pixel ratio to find the optimal control voltage for the panel.
Samsung Display also notes that SmartPower HDR can reduce OLED power consumption by up to 22 percent during normal use and up to 17 percent when displaying HDR content on screen. Samsung Display also notes that in general usage scenarios (e.g. email), power consumption is similar to that of HDR mode.
Personally, I'd like to see Samsung implement this into their TVs and monitors at some point to take advantage of similar power-saving capabilities. After all, marketing a more efficient TV is here.
