Sam Altman has general that OpenAI is looking for a new head of readiness, citing rapid improvement in the situation Artificial Intelligence Toolsmodels and emerging risks.
The ChatGPT maker is offering a $555,000 salary plus equity to one lucky winner, but CEO Altman warned that the position of “chief readiness officer” would come with a high level of stress.
Key to this position is understanding how advanced models can be abused, making security decisions, and securing OpenAI systems to reduce risk.
OpenAI Hires Head of Readiness
Altman said in his post that OpenAI saw a “preview” of the models' impact on mental health in 2025, seemingly acknowledging a number of deaths linked to ChatGPT interactions. OpenAI had Already rolled back the GPT-4o update once recognized, this may increase harmful user behavior.
“We are entering a world where we need greater understanding and measurement of how these capabilities can be abused, and how we can limit these shortcomings both in our products and in the world so that we can all enjoy the enormous benefits,” he wrote.
The soon-to-be-appointed chief will lead a “small group” [but] a high-performing team adhering to the OpenAI readiness framework.
Previously, this position was held by Alexander Madri, but OpenAI reassigned him. This position was later filled by Joaquín Quiñonero Candela, but Candela is now head of the recruiting department. Lillian Weng also served briefly as the department's chief of preparedness.
“It's going to be intense work, and you're going to be thrown into the deep end almost immediately,” Altman warned.
Former employees have previously criticized the company for prioritizing AGI's commercial opportunities and goals, but Altman's latest proposal to appoint a head of readiness, coupled with a healthy salary package, could mark an important shift.
