OpenAI will soon allow “erotica” for ChatGPT users who verify their age on the platform. IN X-post on On Tuesday, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman said the company will add support for mature conversations when it launches age controls in December.
“As we more fully implement age restrictions and as part of our philosophy of 'treating adult users like adults,' we will allow even more, such as erotica for verified adults,” Altman writes. Earlier this month OpenAI hinted at permission for developers to build “mature” ChatGPT applications once it has implemented “appropriate age verification and controls.”
Along with adding “erotica”, OpenAI also plans to launch a new version of ChatGPT that “behaves more like what people liked in 4o.” Just a day after GPT-5 became the default model for ChatGPT, OpenAI has returned GPT-4o as an option after people complained that the new model was less attractive.
Altman said OpenAI made ChatGPT “pretty restrictive so that we're careful about mental health issues,” adding that the company realized the change made the chatbot “less useful/enjoyable for many users who don't have mental health issues.” OpenAI has since launched tools for “better detection” when the user is in a state of mental disorder.
OpenAI also announced forming a “wellbeing and artificial intelligence” council to help shape OpenAI's response to “complex or sensitive” scenarios. The council consists of a team of eight researchers and experts studying the impact of technology and artificial intelligence on mental health. But, How Ars Technique indicatesit does not include suicide prevention experts, many of whom recently called OpenAI will implement additional protections for users with suicidal thoughts.
“Now that we have been able to mitigate serious mental health problems and have new tools, in most cases we will be able to safely ease restrictions,” Altman writes in his X post.
