Sally Kirkland, a veteran of stage, film and television who was nominated for an Oscar for her starring role in the 1987 film Anna, has died in hospice care. She was 84.

Kirkland has performed on stage and screen for six decades and has appeared in more than 300 projects. Her most notable role was in the 1973 film The Sting, opposite Paul Newman and Robert Redford.
She also appeared in The Way We Were with Barbra Streisand, Revenge with Kevin Costner, EDTV directed by Ron Howard, JFK directed by Oliver Stone and Bruce Almighty with Jim Carrey.
Friends of Kirkland organized online fundraising a year ago to help cover her medical expenses. Earlier this year, she broke bones in her neck, right wrist and left hip, complicating her recovery.

During treatment, she developed two separate life-threatening infections that required extensive hospitalization and rehabilitation.

A GoFundMe appeal revealed that medical expenses associated with her recovery are putting a strain on her finances.
“Although Sally had a successful career as a working actress, due to poor advice from a financial advisor/business manager in the 2007 market crash, Sally lost most of her investments and the money she made at the peak of her career,” wrote her friends Paige Dylan, Coty Galloway and Mel England.
More than $60,000 was raised for her care.
Last Friday, Kirkland's friends said she was receiving hospice care and thanked everyone for their support.
“Her passion and dedication to her craft not only helped shape the industry, but also had a lasting impact on everyone who was lucky enough to know her,” they wrote.

Kirkland's Long and Memorable Career
In Anna, Kirkland portrayed a fading Czech film star who moves to the United States and helps mentor a young actor played by fashion model Paulina Porizkova.
Although Kirkland did not win an Academy Award for her role in Anna, she won the 1988 Golden Globe and Independent Spirit Awards for Best Actress.
Most recently, she appeared in the 2024 film “Sallywood“, which follows a young writer who moves to Hollywood to pursue his dreams, inspired by Kirkland's career.
Her television credits include appearances on Criminal Minds and Roseanne, as well as recurring roles on Valley of the Dolls and Charlie's Angels.
