Sales of PS5 Exclusive Ghost of Yotei In-Line With Ghost of Tsushima in Europe, New Data Reveals

Ghost of Yothei New data shows that sales are in line with Ghost of Tsushima's sales in Europe.

According to Gaming businessGhost of Yotei debuted at number 2 on the European GSD charts behind EA's FC 26.

Sony has yet to announce sales figures for Ghost of Yotei, which launched exclusively on PlayStation 5 on October 2, 2025. But we now know that in Europe it's doing about the same as its predecessor, which released in 2020 exclusively on PlayStation 4. That is, for the first few days on sale, as the European GSD schedule runs until October 5th.

There are a number of things worth noting here. Not only did Ghost of Tsushima launch on a console with a larger install base at the time than the PS5 currently has, but it launched during a pandemic that saw record video game sales and player numbers as people were forced to stay home during quarantine.

Game Business noted that Ghost of Yotei is the biggest PlayStation launch since Spider-Man 2 in October 2023. Helldivers 2, released in February 2024, remains PlayStation Studios' fastest-selling game of all time, selling an incredible 12 million units in 12 weeks. The question is whether Ghost of Yotei will live up to Sony's sales expectations over time; The release of Ghost of Tsushima was extremely successful, having sold over 13 million copies as of September 2024.

But it does shed light on how few new games Sony's own studios have released over the past few years. Since Insomniac's Spider-Man 2 released in October 2023, we've had the aforementioned Helldivers 2, the disastrous Concord, Team Asobi's wonderful Astro Bot, Lego Horizon Adventures, MLB The Show 25, and a slew of remasters. Naughty Dog appears to have completely skipped the PS5 generation in terms of brand new games.

Sony games known to be in development include Bungie's Marathon, Housemarque's Saros, Insomniac's Wolverine, Naughty Dog's Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet, Haven's Fairgames and Horizon's multiplayer title Guerrilla. A slew of Sony's first-party games have been canceled as the company's live-service progress stalled, including multiplayer game The Last of Us, a live-service God of War game, and another live-service game from Bend Studio. Bend's last new game was 2019's Days Gone for PlayStation 4, which came out on PC in 2021.

But how did Ghost of Yotei fare in the US? According to Matt PiscatellaSenior Director Circana, Ghost of Yotei ranked 12th in the top 15 games by total weekly active users for the week ending October 4, with 4.4% of active PlayStation players using it. Coincidentally, Ghost of Tsushima also ranked 12th during launch week back in 2020 with 4.4% of active PlayStation players.

So it looks like Ghost of Yotei achieved the same result as Ghost of Tsushima, at least at launch. It will be interesting to see if Sony says anything about its results in its upcoming financial reports and how sales will hold up in the coming weeks as we head into the crucial holiday season.

About what will happen next from the developer of Sucker Punch, in an interview with the publication VGKco-founder and studio head Brian Fleming said the studio will decide on its next project once the multiplayer expansion Ghost of Yotei: Legends releases in 2026. But, according to his assumption, don't expect a flurry of games from a relatively modest developer – it's one project at a time.
