Ruby Rose not happy with the reception Christie got it, and she thinks one man is to blame: Sydney Sweeney. On Topicsthe actor wrote: “Christy Martin's original script was incredible. Life changing. I was drawn to the role of Cherry. Everyone had experience with the base material. Most of us were actually gay. That's one of the reasons I stayed in the role.” Rose then criticized Sweeney and her team's statements about the film. Box office. Rose claims that Sweeney's team said they made the film for “the people,” meaning gays, but that “no one of 'the people' wants to see someone who hates them marching around pretending to be us. You're a moron and you ruined the movie. Period. Christie deserved better.” Rose appears to be referring to rumors about Sweeney's MAGA affiliation and/or American Eagle Jeans/Genes Controversy. When asked GQ if she wanted to comment on criticism of an ad, she would say, “I think that when I have an issue that I want to talk about, people will listen.”
Christie debuted at number 11 at the domestic box office last weekendfrom $1.3 million on 2,000 screens. Tron: Ares in the fifth week of the run I pushed Christie out of the top 10 with earnings of $1.8 million. However, critics praised Sweeney. Diversity called her performance a “powerful, truthful, game-changing knockout,” and Vulture Alison Willmore wrote that it's potentially Oscar-worthy: “As a public figure, she represents an empty space onto which increasingly disordered discourse is projected. As an actress, however, she can be extremely charming.”
