Romero Games working on smaller shooter that borrows from its cancelled project

Irish company Romero Games is working on a new, smaller project that is very different from the shooter it was working on that was canceled by the publisher.

Performance on stage Madrid Video Game Show 2025as reported by Eurogamer – Industry veteran John Romero said the studio has “survived” the aforementioned game's cancellation, adding that it has been “completely redesigned.”

The new project is “much smaller” and uses elements from the canceled shooter.

Romero also mentions that the canceled game is a “50 million game”, which is the first insight into the scale of the project.

“So we survived the cancellation of our huge game,” Romero said.

“We had 110 really good people working on the game every day for many years. The game has been almost completely redesigned. The new game has nothing in common with the previous one, but includes many elements that we had in the previous game. We are not starting from scratch.

“We have a $50 million game that we can cut and paste into a brand new indie game. We have a lot of things that we can add to the game. The design is completely different, but the team is very excited about the new design. It's a much smaller game, but it's more fun for us because all the people who worked on it were directors of different departments and they didn't actually have to write the code or design or anything themselves, now we can actually do what we're really good at.” we are ourselves, so small teams are great.”

In July, Romero Games announced it was canceling the first-person shooter game in development. after the project's publisher stopped funding.

Although the identity of this publisher was never revealed, reports indicated that it was Microsoft. News of Romero Games' cancellation also comes at the same time that Xbox has embarked on a restructuring process that has seen some 9,000 employees cut their jobs, as well as numerous project cancellations and studio closures.

Romero Games later denied rumors of closure. as a result of the abolition of this title.
