Grand theft auto 6 We're just over six months away from release, but the game's developer, Rockstar Games, has something brewing. Earlier this week, the studio laid off between 30 and 40 staff from its UK and Canadian offices. The laid off employees were reportedly trying to join the union when they were laid off.
Bloomberg reported on this story and added that all of the fired employees were members of a private union chat group on Discord. According to a spokesman for the Independent Workers' Union of Great Britain, the group was a mixture of members who had already joined the union and those who were trying to organize a union at Rockstar.
“Rockstar has just committed one of the most egregious and ruthless acts of union busting in the history of the gaming industry,” IWGB President Alex Marshall said in a statement. “This blatant disregard for the law and the lives of the workers who make their billions is an insult to their fans and the global industry.”
A spokesman for Rockstar's parent company, Take-Two Interactive, said it supported Rockstar's decision and said the employees were fired “for gross misconduct and for no other reason.”
It looks like this dispute may end up being settled in the courtroom, depending on what the British and Canadian courts have to say about it. This may take a long time.
Rockstar Games recently shared a job listing that predicts… GTA 6 will have its biggest launch yet in the history of video games. This seems highly likely given that Grand Theft Auto 5 topped 215 million in sales earlier this year and GTA Online continues to be a cash cow for the company.
Take-Two CEO Strauss Zelnick also noted that he's not worried about AI competition from GTAand he was fairly consistent in its assessment of technology.
GTA 6 will be released on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S on May 26, 2026.
