Rivian finally adds full Apple Wallet Digital Key support with new OTA update

Rivian owners, your phone is finally becoming a full-fledged key. Head of software company, Wassim Bensaid confirmed that the upcoming .46 update will officially turn on Digital key support for second generation R1S and R1T vehicles. This isn't just an app update; it represents its own keys that live right inside your Apple Wallet on your iPhone and Apple Watch.

The best part? He uses both Ultra Wideband (UWB) for precise hands-free unlocking and NFC. This NFC bit is huge because it supports Apple's Power Reserve feature—meaning you can still tap your phone to unlock your truck for up to five hours after the battery dies.

Rivian is also increasing the digital key limit from four to eight per vehicle so the whole family can have access. And this doesn't just apply to Apple users; Full compatibility will also be available for Google Wallet and Samsung Wallet.

Why is this important

This is an important moment of maturity for Rivian. If you've driven a first-gen car, you know how difficult it can be to rely on the Bluetooth unlock in the Rivian app. It worked, but not on the same level as the seamless experience offered by BMW or Tesla. It lacked the native wallet feel, precision, and definitely didn't work if your phone died.

This move to true digital key support bridges that gap. Finally, it brings Rivian up to industry gold standards (specifically using the Apple CarKey platform) and actually uses the updated hardware built into the Gen 2 platform.

Why should you care?

Ideally, it just makes life easier and reduces stress. You can actually leave the bulky key fob at home without worrying about being stranded if your phone's battery reaches 0%.

This adds a level of security and redundancy that was not there before. Additionally, the ability to instantly share access via text message is a game changer. If a friend needs to borrow a truck or take something out of the trunk, you can send them a key in seconds without the need for a physical transfer.

What's next

Expect the .46 OTA update to hit the vehicles later this month. While Gen 2 owners get the full package right away, Gen 1 owners may not be as lucky as they don't have the new UWB hardware.

Rivian says this is just the beginning of the Gen 2 platform, signaling a broader push to make the car feel more like high-tech software rather than a traditional car.
