Resident Evil is doing something a little different next week, swapping out its usual survival horror formula for something a little more tactical. Developed jointly by Aniplex and Joycity, Resident Evil: Survival Unit brings the series' signature fear into the world of base building and real-time strategy, which may seem strange until you realize how exactly the concept fits.
Set against the backdrop of the destruction of another, you guessed it, infested city (Note to residents: stop living in these places!), you lead a small team of survivors trying to hold the situation together. There are resources to gather, fortifications to manage, and those tense moments when you're one bad decision away from losing everything. Although we make the transition from sudden fears to smart choices, it feels like there's classic Resident Evil tension present here.
And yes, The old guard is back in action. Leon, Jill and Claire appear, although this time they look more like unit leaders than lone survivors. You'll also recruit regular folk like scavengers, fighters, and engineers to build your base around a crumbling mansion, which is a nice nod to where it all started. It's a fun mix of strategy and nostalgia, wrapped in the chaos of an infection that never seems to go away.
There are already two million pre-registrations, which says a lot about the curiosity surrounding this twist. Perhaps that's why Aniplex is doubling down on the theatricality. They even confirmed BABYMETAL collaboration for 2026, and it's exactly what you'd expect from Resident Evil, considering the franchise can be used in literally any media form.
Resident Evil: Survival Unit releases worldwide on November 18th, so it won't be long before we see how this new variant ends up.
