The producer of the next highly anticipated Resident Evil title, Resident Evil Requiem, has hinted that the upcoming horror game will retain “some” elements of its former life as an open-world massively multiplayer online game, but didn't tell us which ones.
In an interview with Press Start AustraliaProducer Masato Kumazawa said that Requiem, originally intended to be an open-world multiplayer game, was reinvented when the team decided that fans of the franchise “wouldn't like it” given that the horror aspects were “very bland”.
However, when asked about this, Kumazawa only responded, “There are some remaining elements, but we cannot reveal what they are or how they are,” and laughed when pressed harder for more details.
“Looking at the game when it was multiplayer, the horror was very mild,” he said. “However, with this build we created a game that was fun to play. But we took a closer look at this game and wondered if fans of the franchise would like it, so we thought they […] probably wouldn't have enjoyed it as much.
“That's why we went back to single player. But because it was fun, we added elements from that build into the final game to make it fun.”
When asked what he thinks Resident Evil fans want from a new game, the producer added: “I think fans of the franchise want […] survival horror and fear. That's the first thing the fans want. So, having said that, we can't just add new skins and new characters and give you the same experience. It wouldn't be that good.
“That's why we wanted to make sure we added new elements that would ensure it felt like a new survival horror game.”
Interestingly, Kumazawa also revealed that Requiem was “in development before Village,” so the team is aiming to ensure the game has “focus.”[es] on horror” and does not become too heavy in battle.
eurogamer spoke with game director Koshi Nakanishi at Gamescom to talk pacingwhere he explained that he would be taking the “same” approach” to Requiem as he did to Resident Evil 7, which Nakanishi also directed.
Capcom also recently said that it is looking at the original. Resident Evil Games ideas on how to challenge players in boss battles in Requiem.
Resident Evil Requiem is scheduled for release on February 27, 2026.
