Report: Wizards’ Cam Whitmore out indefinitely with blood clot

Cam Whitmore He was diagnosed with a blood clot in his right shoulder and is out indefinitely, ESPN's Shams Charania reported on Tuesday.

Whitmore, 21, has not played since Dec. 4 due to shoulder soreness. Doctors have now determined that this was due to deep vein thrombosis of the upper extremities.

The Wizards acquired Whitmore, the No. 20 overall pick in the 2023 draft, from the Houston Rockets in the offseason for two second-round picks.

He saw more opportunity in his new games, playing a career-high 18.7 minutes per game, scoring 12.3 points and adding 3.8 rebounds per game.

Now, however, the Odenton, Maryland native will have to sit down.

San Antonio Spurs star Victor Vembanyama missed the second half of last season with deep vein thrombosis but is back at full strength this season.

Similar cases have happened to NBA players before, including Hall of Famer Chris Bosh, whose career was cut short after he was diagnosed with blood clots while playing for Miami. Brandon Ingram, now with the Toronto Raptors, ended his 2018-19 season early with a deep vein thrombosis while he was with the Los Angeles Lakers, and Detroit's Osar Thompson had a blood clot issue that forced him to miss the end of the 2023-24 season.
