Just when you thought we were going survive the year without any really juicy iMac rumors coming report from the Korean publication The Elec. According to the report, Apple has sent “requests for information” to Samsung Display and LG Display regarding OLED displays that could be used for future iMacs.
Essentially, an RFI is when a company asks suppliers to provide specifications and other details about a part that the company needs to develop a product. According to The Elec, Apple said in its solicitations that it is looking for a 24-inch OLED display with a density of 218 pixels per inch and a brightness of 600 nits. It's the same size and density as the iMac's current LED display, but with higher brightness.
There is one big caveat, however, as The Elec points out: “RGB OLED technology capable of reliably mass-producing 20-30-inch displays has not yet been developed.” Mass production has been for much smaller displays, so if Apple continues to produce the iMac with an OLED display, suppliers will have to develop a manufacturing process to create the displays, which will take some time.
The Elect reports that Apple may complete development OLED iMac by 2027 or 2028. If all goes according to plan, the OLED iMac won't be released until 2027 (assuming development wraps up early this year). But it will most likely be available in 2028 or 2029. It is also possible that Apple will decide to abandon the project at the development stage.
Apple is gradually switching its devices from LED displays to OLED. Apple's current iPhone lineup uses OLED. The iPad Pro is the only iPad with an OLED display, but reports say Apple plans to bring it to the iPad mini and iPad Air in the next year or two. Reports also say that Apple plans to release a MacBook Pro with an OLED touchscreen in the second half of 2026.
