Red Dead Redemption 2The opening act was already quite difficult – sliding through knee-deep snow for hours is always brutal – but the introduction to the game was originally intended to put the players, and especially the main character Arthur Morgan, in an even worse situation.
Rockstar Games Grand Theft Auto co-founder and frequent lead writer Dan Houser recently pitched an alternate opening for the open-world cowboy sequel where Arthur Morgan acts “very, very nasty,” but it was scrapped to avoid causing immediate hatred of the game's protagonist.
“And he wasn’t very sympathetic to his casual girlfriend who had a baby. So that made him very, very nasty at first, and I thought that would be fun to play with because then it would make his redemption arc even more interesting,” Houser added, explaining that the final version of Arthur was “still tough and nasty, but he’s a little more likable in the early stages. It was the right decision from a commercial point of view. It’s better this way.”
