Canadian cellist, composer and vocalist Rebecca meat releases his new album Black butterflies today through Magnolia.
Crafted with clear vulnerability and vibrant musical talent, the press release notes that the album is “a powerful meditation on transformation, love and resilience in a world teetering between uncertainty and renewal.”
It was co-produced by Fung's longtime collaborator. Jace LasekThe album was recorded in Fung's studio, where the vulnerable album combines ethereal cello, piano, minimalist beats, expressive violin and Fung's haunting vocals. In addition to Lasek, the fabulous album features bassist Mishka Stein, drummer Andrew Barrbeatmaker Sankara Atzilut and vibraphonist Bruce Caudron, as well as vocals and piano from Patrick Watson – all this contributes to the creation of an atmospheric album.
The dream pop album was created in close collaboration with Watson, and the duo's teamwork is captured and most clearly heard and seen in the title track and video for “If I Could Only See the Distant Sky.” The song combines Fung's intimate, transcendent voice and cello playing with Watson's radiant vocals and piano. The accompanying music video, directed by Yishen Wang, features Fung on 16mm film. The video is shot against the backdrop of Governors Island, and the rough, soft and grainy visuals capture the vibe of the vibrant song.
