Quebec government to arm roadside traffic inspectors – Montreal

The Quebec government has decided to arm the province's roadside inspectors with firearms.

Inspectors have complained for years about unsafe working conditions, which can include violent confrontations with drivers after stopping vehicles.

In March, Quebec's labor tribunal found that equipment provided to inspectors provided insufficient protection during traffic stops.

The tribunal suspended unscheduled inspections of agents due to unsafe conditions preventing them from carrying out normal patrol activities.

Quebec has 300 traffic wardens who will have to undergo special training before they can carry firearms.

The government has also evaluated the option of using stun guns.
