- Second trailer for Hail Mary Project was released
- This gives away a big surprise from the story.
- The new sci-fi film will be released on March 20, 2026.
New trailer for the long-awaited sci-fi film Hail Mary Project was released, but it gives away a major spoiler from the story.
The new film, adapted from Andy Weir's novel of the same name, stars Ryan Gosling as Ryland Grace, a science teacher who wakes up on a spaceship with no memory of who he is or how he got there.
This mysterious opening premise means that the story unfolds step by step as Grace slowly regains his memory of himself and, crucially, why he ended up on a spaceship light-years from Earth.
While the big planet-saving mission he's on isn't hidden from the novel's synopsis (Grace learns very quickly why he's on the spaceship), there's another key plot reveal that's left until later in the story.
Indeed, it's not until you're about a quarter of the way through the book that you're introduced to a new character who ends up becoming an important part of the entire mission. This is an important plot reveal because this is where the story really starts to go on track.
While the first Hail Mary Project The trailer only briefly showed Ryan Gosling's desperate mission to save the sunthe second, released today (November 18), takes an even more in-depth look at the mystery character – and that might mean you might want to miss it.
What does the second Hail Mary trailer reveal?
Spoiler alert! Come back now if you don't want to spoil key plot elements. Project Hail Mary.
For anyone who has read the book or doesn't mind spoilers, the mystery character I'm talking about above is an alien named Rocky who Grace meets in space and who ends up becoming one of the main characters in the entire story.
The appearance of the alien marks a decisive turning point in the narrative, raising the stakes of the mission to a whole new level. But while the book's blurb and the movie's plot hint that Grace might not be alone or have an “unexpected friendship,” the first trailer immediately gave away that detail.
Of course, the first official trailer only teased a glimpse of said alien (for those who want to go back and watch it in the video below, skip to the two minute and 25 second mark), but if you ask me, that's still a major plot reveal.
In fact, I thought this was such a significant detail in the story that I didn't even mention it when I first covered the trailer, but Amazon MGM Studios has since confirmed that they have no plans to hide the alien from audiences by releasing a second official trailer.
The new trailer includes plenty of clips from the alien's scenes, and it's not just quick shots of its limbs. The three-minute and four-second trailer includes several clips that give viewers a look at the alien's full, rocky form.
Perhaps this is to appeal to fans of the book like myself who might also be interested in seeing how the arachnid alien eventually took shape in the film, or maybe it will hook those unfamiliar with the story by seeing the extraterrestrial being at the heart of it all. Whatever the reason, I still think the alien may have been kept out of the marketing materials.
I may be in the minority, but playing out all the different scenarios a movie can go in, only to be surprised by the direction it goes in, or finally seeing the sets and costumes from the book come to life is a big part of the enjoyment I get from watching the movie. Without this, the element of surprise is removed, which can make the story too predictable.
Amazon, MGM Studios and Sony might as well have brought back the late Don LaFontaine to make a trailer in typical 80s fashion, where the entire plot is revealed through narration. To be clear, it's not all bad, but I think our first look at the alien could have waited until after the film's premiere.
At least it won't last long Hail Mary Project hits theaters March 20, 2026—who else is counting down to when you can book your IMAX tickets?
