Prime Minister Mark Carney welcomed Canadian tennis star Victoria Mboko to Parliament Hill on Wednesday, telling the Toronto teen Canadians were proud of her breakthrough season on the WTA Tour.
Carney met 19-year-old Mboko and her family at her West Block office and saw in person the trophy she won at this summer's National Bank Open in Montreal.
“How honored you are to be here, how proud we are of all that you have achieved at such a young age,” Carney told Mboko, saying he was speaking on behalf of Canadians.
The Prime Minister added that the National Bank Open award is a symbol of perseverance, resilience and immense talent.
Victoria Mboko completed an incredible run in Montreal to claim the National Bank Open title.
After his speech, Mboko signed the tennis racket she used in the winning match in Montreal. Carney gasped, “No way!” and said that he would be given a place of honor.
Watching Carney twirl it, Mboko said he could play with it if he wanted. Carney laughed, saying his tennis game wasn't that good.
Mboko entered the tennis season ranked 350th in the world. She finished her career in 18th place after winning two tournaments, including the WTA 1000-level National Bank Open.
