Despite their silence, we reported to Toronto police. five people were arrested during a break-in at a private “Metropolitan University of Toronto Students in Support of Israel” event off-campus at 49 Elm St., near Bay and Dundas streets. — on Wednesday, when glass was broken and people were taken to the hospital.

Police allege that “a group of protesters entered a private event without permission” and “violently entered the building, damaging property, and entered the common area where participants were gathered,” causing “those in attendance to fear for their safety” and “one person sustained injuries from broken glass.”

Charged are Nicole Byton, 25, of Oakville, Kia Alexis, 22, of Toronto, Fatima Mughni, 23, of Toronto, Chelsea Wu, 29, of Toronto and Manal Kamran, 21, of Toronto. None of these allegations have been tested in court and they are innocent until proven guilty.

But this happened just a couple of days after the glass breaking incident in North York Synagogue which has already been vandalized 10 times, as well as dozens of other anti-Semitic incidents, you would think it would be on the list of priorities for political leaders.

This is wrong.

We apologize, but this video has failed to load.

However, this was an escalation from what we had previously seen since October 7, 2023. This was not a covert attack of vandalism, but a brazen ambush and lynching on private property.

“The mafia were wearing masks, broke the glass door with a drill and pushed through the barrier,” one witness said.

Soon the mob wrote on Instagram: “We have parted ways. Follow the statement. Our universities refuse to hold war criminals accountable. We will hold them accountable.”

It's a twisted form of vigilantism, just days after Chow falsely accused Israel of committing “genocide” in the Gaza Strip.

Of course, she had nothing to say about this yet. Hamas kills its own people with street executions after the first ceasefire there is nothing to say about this attack either.

TORONTO'S JEWS KNOW HISTORY WELL

Toronto Jews understand what this means. And history shows where this is going.

“Extremists threaten our way of life and must face real consequences,” the Center for Israeli and Jewish Affairs (CIJA) said. “Leaders at all levels of government must do everything in their power to confront this growing threat.”

They don't do anything.

“This is an unacceptable escalation of violence that targets Jews, silences peaceful dialogue, and openly uses intimidation and violence to disrupt a planned event,” Stand with Us Canada said.

Hillel Canada added: “There should be no place for violence or intimidation” against Jewish students on or off campus, and “we call on the TMU administration to take urgent and immediate action to ensure that those who committed today’s incident are held accountable.”

B'nai B'rith Canada Director of Research and Outreach Richard Robertson said it was a “targeted act of hatred against Jewish students and their guests, carried out with the intent to intimidate and silence” and “we call for a full investigation into the attack and injuries sustained, immediate disciplinary consequences for those involved, the suspension and review of any TMU-recognized student groups involved in the violence, and specific guarantees for the safety of Jewish students and all members of the university communities.”

NOT PROTEST, BUT PERSECUTION

Matthew Taub of Unapologetically Jewish said: “University and city leaders must act decisively to restore safety and ensure that Jewish students are protected, respected and never again abandoned in the face of this type of terror” and “Jewish students have a right to feel safe on campus and not be subjected to veiled violence for being Jewish or for welcoming Israeli visitors. This attack is a direct result of reckless behavior.” Mayor Olivia Chow's rhetoric that has emboldened extremists and normalized hatred of Toronto's Jewish community. What happened today is not protest, it is persecution.”

If this had been a protest of truckers, then to stop it they would have had to invoke the Emergency Situations Law, although there was no violence. But when Jews are attacked, our leaders yawn, throw out the occasional standby platitude, and then go back into ignore mode.

This goes back to the first pro-Hamas protests I covered at Yonge and Bloor, City Hall and Gaza Square in Mississauga just after October 7 and weeks before Israel responded.

Many participants in these protests did not oppose Israel's response to the largest number of Jews killed in a day since the Holocaust because Israel had not yet responded. They celebrated the death of the Jews.

The leaders then let it go, and we are still dealing with the consequences of that inaction.
