Police investigating break-in at home reported to belong to Shai Gilgeous-Alexander

Police were investigating a burglary at a home Friday that reportedly belonged to Oklahoma City Thunder player Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, which occurred while the reigning NBA MVP was playing a game the night before.

The Thunder referred questions to police in Nichols Hills, an enclave north of downtown Oklahoma City. Police have not confirmed who lived in the house or said what may have been stolen from it.

Gilgeous-Alexander is originally from Hamilton, Ontario.

Officers responded to a report of a home robbery around 7:45 p.m. Thursday while the Thunder were playing at home against the Washington Wizards. Local news stations in Oklahoma City showed police at the home.

“The suspects left the area before police arrived,” police said in a statement. “Although no arrests have been made, there is no reason to believe the public is in any danger.”

The break-in reflected a series of burglaries at the homes of prominent professional athletes across the United States in recent months. The players were targeted because they were believed to have high-quality goods in their homes.

Athletes whose homes have been burglarized include NFL players Patrick Mahomes, Travis Kelce and Joe Burrow, NBA player Luka Doncic and NHL player Evgeni Malkin.

Law enforcement officials had previously warned sports leagues that thieves would strike on game days when they knew players would be out, often breaking rear windows.

In November 2024, the NBA sent out a memo to teams urging them to be vigilant when it comes to home security. Among its recommendations, the league suggests players: install updated alarm systems with cameras and use them whenever you leave the house, keep valuables in locked and secured safes, remove online real estate listings that may show interior photos of the home, use security guard services during long trips away from home and even bring in dogs to protect the home.
