I was pleasantly surprised by how Photoshop AI works and have compiled all my experiences using Photoshop AI into this tutorial. But to be clear, AI tools are definitely not for everyone, especially professionals who know Photoshop inside and out. How to Create AI Images Using Photoshop
Adobe Firefly's AI image model is available as a standalone app and built into Photoshop, so you can use it wherever you want. If you're already working in Photoshop, here's how to access Firefly.
- Open your Photoshop project. If you are using the latest version of PS, there should be an option on the contextual taskbar that says Create an image.
- Go to Editthen click Generate image. You can also click the icon that looks like an arrow with a sparkle in the toolbar on the left.
- Enter your invitation, select your style, and upload all your reference images.
- Click Generate.
- Navigate between the different options using the arrows on the taskbar below.
When you write an invitation, don't be afraid to add a lot of detail and place the most important elements at the beginning. If you don't like the images, you can click the image popup or the four square icon to customize the tooltip and reference images. You can click on the three vertical dots at the end of the panel to give generational feedback, remove backgrounds, or create similar images. If you still don't like what you have, I recommend starting over with a new prompt rather than trying to endlessly tweak and generate it in hopes of getting it right.
How to Use Generative Features in Photoshop
You can also use generative AI tools to edit an existing project in Photoshop. Generative filling, expansion, and deletion are some of the most popular artificial intelligence tools. Here's how to use each one.
Generative fill looks like a miniature artificial intelligence image generator. This is one of the most popular artificial intelligence tools in Photoshop. With generative fill, you can select a specific area of your design, enter a text prompt, and it will create a design for that area. You can find a generative fill by choosing Edit > Generative Fill. Be sure to use the Selection Brush tool. Mark the area where you want the items to appear, enter a hint, and click Create.
Generative extension useful when you need more space in an image. You can create new parts of the image to blend seamlessly with the current image, or enter a text prompt and create a new landscape. You can also use it to expand your project. To access the generative extension, select the crop tool, stretch the canvas to the size you want, enter a tooltip if you want, and click Create.

Generative removal looks like an eraser with enhanced artificial intelligence. The tool isolates and removes specific elements from your project without disturbing the entire image. There are two ways to remove objects from your work. The first is to select an object using the Object Selector, click Generative Fill, and enter the word “delete” in the tooltip. Otherwise, you can use the deletion tool (Spot Repair Tool > Delete Tool) to manually select the objects you want to delete.

Other AI Tools You Can Try in Photoshop
Replacing the sky is a cool AI tool that can add drama to your landscapes. You can create an alternate sky by going to Edit > Sky Replacement and choosing from a variety of options, including sunsets, blue skies, and colorful options labeled “breathtaking.” Once you select a preset you like, you can manually adjust the brightness and other elements.
In this case, I used AI sky replacement to add some blue Carolina skies (right) to the original shot of Kenan Stadium (left).
Create background good for product photography or other shots where the subject or subject is the focal point of the image. Load your photo into Photoshop, click Remove Background in the contextual taskbar (the pin box that appears when you select a layer), and click Create Background. Some backgrounds turn out better than others. The urban spaces I created looked a little fake, but the colored or patterned backgrounds turned out great.
There are other AI tools that may be suitable for you depending on your project. Neural filters can be used for more detailed photo editing, and curvature handle can help designers create more consistent arcs. We also expect to see more AI-powered editing tools introduced in Photoshop this year.
Overall, Photoshop's AI suite performed well. Some tools have proven useful, but you need to know what they do to get the best results. For example, generative expansion is good for resizing photos, and generative deletion is great for erasing photobombed objects. Other tools, such as the sky replacement tool, worked for some photos but not others. I won't use Photoshop AI for every project, but I think there may be cases where it's a good option.
