The father of 10, who is also a grandfather, coached football at St. Michael's Catholic School in Fairhope, Alabama, where his son is a four-star defensive recruit.
The Colts sought help after starter Daniel Jones suffered a season-ending Achilles tear last Sunday and rookie reserve Riley Leonard suffered an undisclosed knee injury. Leonard has been a full participant in practice all week and was injury-free on Friday, indicating he will be ready to play. But Rivers is set to start for a Colts team that will compete with the Rams for first place in the NFC.
By deciding to add Rivers to their active roster, the Colts will reset the quarterback's Hall of Fame eligibility because Legend of Chargers he must have been retired for at least five years to be considered. Rivers made it clear this week that it's not a concern.
“I’m obviously honored to be mentioned among the other 25 guys,” Rivers said of being named a semifinalist. “But I'm not holding my breath about it. I'm not counting down the years. With all due respect to the Hall, if one day I can be a part of this group, it will be special, there's no doubt about that. But extending that timeline, if that happens, was not a factor in what I thought.”
