‘Person of interest’ detained over Brown University shooting, official says

Watch: Police release surveillance footage of Brown University shooting suspect

A suspect has been detained in connection with a shooting at Brown University in the US that left two people dead, police said.

Nine more people were injured as a result gunman opened fire at the university in Providence, Rhode Island, on Saturday.

Police said the arrested suspect was in his 20s, but did not release his name.

Providence Mayor Brett Smiley said seven people injured in the incident remain in stable condition, one is in critical condition and one has been released.

A gunman opened fire in a classroom around 4:00 pm local time (21:00 GMT) Saturday in the Holly Engineering Building on the east side of Brown's campus, officials said.

The identities of those killed and wounded have not yet been released, but Brown University President Christina Paxson told reporters Saturday that all of the victims, including those killed and wounded, were students.

In a statement released by the university on Sunday, Paxson said some campus areas remain closed as police continue to investigate.

About 2,000 students were moved to safety overnight, she said, adding that she was “deeply touched” by students and local residents opening their homes.

Paxson said support is being provided to the families of the two slain students.

“There are not enough words of comfort for families who have lost a child, but we will do everything in our power,” she added.

At a news conference Sunday, Smiley said an earlier shelter-in-place order for residents had been lifted.

The mayor said he met the victims and their families at the hospital and was “amazed” by their “courage, hope and gratitude.”

Earlier, police released CCTV footage of the male suspect leaving the scene wearing black clothing. Police said no firearms were found during a search of the building.

In a post on X, FBI Director Cash Patel said the suspect was detained at a Coventry hotel early Sunday morning based on information from Providence police.

Providence Police Chief Oscar Perez confirmed Sunday that officers are not looking for anyone else and are working with prosecutors to gather evidence.

Hundreds of police and federal agents were sent to Providence on Saturday to find the suspect.

Speaking at the White House, President Trump said he hoped the nine injured students would “make a quick recovery” and paid respects to the families of the two killed.

The attack at the Ivy League university brings the number of mass shootings in the U.S. to 389 this year, according to the Gun Violence Archive.

It defines mass shootings as the killing or injury of four or more victims, not including the attacker.
