Patriots’ Stefon Diggs faces strangulation and assault charges in Massachusetts | New England Patriots

New England Patriots wide receiver Stefon Diggs faces felony and misdemeanor charges stemming from an alleged incident earlier this month, as a Massachusetts judge considers whether key court records should be kept secret pending his arraignment.

Diggs, 32, is charged with strangulation or suffocation and assault and battery in connection with an incident that allegedly occurred on Dec. 2, according to court records. A hearing on the motion took place Tuesday morning in Dedham District Court, where Diggs' attorney appeared remotely and asked that police reports and related documents be confiscated.

Defense attorney Michael R. DiStefano argued that releasing the records at this stage would create a significant risk of harm to the case due to widespread publicity. He also told the court that Diggs' legal team is engaged in negotiations aimed at reaching a financial settlement with the alleged victim.

“They are currently working to come to an agreement on this issue,” DiStefano said.

The judge accepted the request to seize the documents presented and stated that a decision would be made soon. The court is also considering a defense request to delay Diggs' arraignment from Jan. 23 to March. As currently scheduled, the arraignment will take place two days before the AFC Championship game.

The Patriots said in a statement that Diggs denies the allegations and that the organization is monitoring the situation.

“The New England Patriots are aware of the allegations made against Stefon Diggs,” the team said. “Stefon has informed the organization that he categorically denies the allegations. We stand with Stephon. We will continue to gather information and will fully cooperate with the appropriate authorities and law enforcement. NFL as needed.”

Diggs, a veteran receiver acquired by New England last offseason, has emerged as the Patriots' leading pass catcher this year, recording 82 receptions for 970 yards and four touchdowns. New England (13-3) clinched its first AFC East title since 2019 over the weekend and can secure a first-round playoff berth with a Week 18 win over the Miami Dolphins and a loss to the Denver Broncos.

Diggs and his girlfriend, a recording artist Cardi Bwelcomed a baby boy in November.

Additional information about the alleged incident was not immediately available. Diggs is scheduled to be arraigned on Jan. 23 unless the court grants the defense's request for a delay.
