MADRID — MADRID (AP) — The mayor of Madrid on Wednesday rebuked Spanish pop star Rosalia for briefly causing pandemonium earlier this week by calling a flash mob that prompted riot police to take control of the rowdy, impromptu gathering.
The Barcelona-born singer-songwriter gave her social media followers about an hour's notice that she would be in the city center on Monday evening to promote the launch of her new album “Lux”. Thousands of people gathered there just in time to see the Grammy winner make a quick appearance while the album cover was shown on the big screen. Fans chased Rosalia along a busy main road as she ran out of her car and into the hotel.
Authorities deployed several police units to control traffic and closed a nearby subway station. City Hall is assessing whether the singer could be fined for organizing the event without prior permission, Mayor Jose Luis Martinez-Almeida said Wednesday.
She “could have done things differently,” he said, adding that she “jeopardized the physical safety” of her fans and passersby.
Rosalía, 33, has won the Latin Grammy for Album of the Year twice, first in the Album of the Year category. “Ill Will” in 2019 and then for Motomami in 2022.
“Lux”, her fourth studio album, will be released on November 7th.
