- OWC Envoy Ultra Thunderbolt 5 8TB SSD reaches speeds exceeding 6,000MB per second
- Bus operation eliminates the need for external adapters or power supplies.
- Compatible with Mac computers, Windows systems, tablets and other platforms.
OWC Announces 8TB Version of Envoy Ultra Thunderbolt 5 external SSDexpanding a line that is already focused on high-throughput portable storage.
According to VNKThis device is the first external Thunderbolt 5 SSD to achieve this capacity while remaining fully bus-powered, without the need for external adapters.
It provides data transfer rates exceeding 6000 MB per second under suitable conditions and supports a wide range of modern computing platforms.
Thunderbolt 5 interface
The Envoy Ultra 8TB uses an internal PCIe Gen4-class architecture coupled with a Thunderbolt 5 interface that Intel introduced to ease data transfer constraints for demanding workloads.
OWC says the drive can also utilize the maximum possible bandwidth when connected to Thunderbolt 4, Thunderbolt 3 or USB4 systems.
However, performance depends on the host hardware.
“Envoy Ultra… is rugged, reliable, and fast in a way that actually makes you feel like you're working, not just the specs… you'll get over 6,000 MB per second without external power, adapters, or noise,” said Larry O'Connor, founder and CEO of Other World Computing (OWC).
“With this first and only 8TB Thunderbolt 5 SSD, professionals no longer have to choose between speed, capacity and portability.” he added.
Envoy Ultra uses a fanless aluminum chassis that passively dissipates heat, eliminating mechanical noise during long periods of use in quiet work environments.
The case is IP67 rated for dust and water resistance, limiting exposure to moisture but still being vulnerable to full immersion.
However this portable SSD Designed to withstand physical stress during transportation.
Power is supplied directly from the host system via the built-in Thunderbolt cable, eliminating the need for external power supplies or detachable adapters for mobile use.
The drive is compatible with Mac computers, Windows systems, iPad Pro, Chromebooksand Surface devices, allowing them to be used across multiple platforms without separate hardware options.
“Thunderbolt 5 was designed to eliminate bottlenecks, giving creators and power users the freedom to run at full speed wherever they are,” said Ben Hacker, general manager of Intel's Client Connectivity Business.
“OWC's 8TB Envoy Ultra is a great example of combining Thunderbolt 5 performance with massive capacity and a truly portable design that enables workflows that were previously impractical.”
The 8TB Envoy Ultra is priced at $1,699.99, which is much higher than the smaller capacity model. Envoy Ultra Thunderbolt 5 SSDwhich starts at $449.99. It is available in the official OWC store and on major retail platforms.
